Sunil Bharti Mittal is the Founder, Chairman and Managing Director of Bharti Group. When we speak about the Indian Telecom sector, the name Sunil Mittal comes first in mind. In one generation he started with a small business in Ludhiana and grew at tremendous pace to build the number one telecom empire in India.

Sunil dabbled in several small time businesses during the initial 10 years of his struggle. His first big break came in 1983 when he switched to manufacturing push button telephones. He was the first to introduce the push button phones in India. He has several other firsts to his credit, viz. the first Cordless Phone introduced in India, the first Answering Machine launched in India and the first Fax Machine. Since then, there has been no looking back.

The next big turning point for Sunil Mittal came in 1992 when the Indian government liberalized the telecom sector and began awarding licenses for mobile phone services. In 1995 the Bharti Telecom Limited clinched the rights to operate mobile phone services in New Delhi, and the Airtel phones were introduced. His company kept on growing at a fast pace and today the Bharti Group is worth more than Rs.12 billion.
