Kolkata - the City of Joy
Kolkata, earlier known as Calcutta, got its new name in 2001.
Kolkata is the capital of the State of West Bengal. A 300 years old city, Kolkata was the capital of the British
Empire till 1912. Hence the effect of the British culture can be seen till today.
Kolkata is a vibrant city equipped with all modern amenities that any metro would boast of. It is a charming city
and has its own leisurely life style.
Kolkata runs the India's first Metro Railway and was once also well known for it Tram Cars. The city houses some of
the heritage buildings which are more than 100 years old.
Today, Kolkata is the commercial and industrial hub of eastern India. A major port, Kolkata is situated on the right
bank of the river Hooghly (about 150 km upstream from the Bay of Bengal). The core city is sandwiched between the river
on the west, the salt lakes to the east and the marshes and the swamps to the south. The region is part of the world's
largest deltaic zone at the mouths of the river Ganges. The famous Sunderban mangrove forests are to the south of the
city.
